Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela emphasized the importance of responsible hiring practices, urging business owners to refrain from employing cheap labor. Mawela stressed the need for employers to verify the legitimacy of their workers’ immigration status and required documentation. Failure to comply, he warned, would result in intervention by the Department of Home Affairs.
In a recent operation, Gauteng police have made significant strides in combating illegal employment by apprehending two businessmen for hiring undocumented foreigners. The festive season raids, conducted under Operation Shanela in the north of Tshwane on Thursday, aimed to address various offenses, including illegal employment practices.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela issued a stern warning to the community, especially business owners who may be tempted to engage in hiring practices that exploit cheap labor. Mawela emphasized the need for employers to ensure that individuals they hire are in the country legally and possess the required documentation. He made it clear that the Department of Home Affairs would take decisive action against those found in violation of these regulations.
Over 900 individuals were arrested during the operation for various offenses, such as drunk driving, outstanding warrants, and possession of stolen items. Notably, a significant portion of those apprehended were suspected of being in the country illegally, underscoring the prevalence of this issue.
