Renowned DJ and music producer Kabelo Motsamai, popularly known as Prince Kaybee, has found himself in hot water with the South African Revenue Service (SARS). The artist, famous for his hit “Gugulethu,” received a letter of demand from SARS for more than R2 million in outstanding personal income tax.

The Tax Demand

SARS issued a final letter of demand to the 35-year-old musician, highlighting a tax debt amounting to R2,384,628. The letter warned Prince Kaybee of severe consequences, including the possible seizure and auctioning of his assets if he fails to settle the debt.

Payment Options and Consequences

The letter from SARS outlined several options for Prince Kaybee to address the debt:

  • Payment Installments: If unable to pay the full amount, he could apply for a payment plan.
  • Debt Suspension: He could request a suspension if he plans to dispute the debt.
  • Debt Compromise: Negotiating a compromise could yield a higher return for the fiscus than liquidation.

Failure to respond or arrange a payment plan could result in SARS taking drastic measures, such as:

  • Appointing a third party to settle the debt using funds owed to or held for Prince Kaybee.
  • Obtaining a civil judgment and issuing a warrant for the Sheriff to attach and sell his assets.

Background and Additional Issues

SARS spokesperson Siphithi Sibeko reiterated that the agency cannot comment on individual taxpayer matters due to legal restrictions. This confidentiality protects the details of Prince Kaybee’s tax situation from public scrutiny.

Recent Allegations

Prince Kaybee recently faced allegations from Botlhale Phora, a contestant from Idols SA season 13. Phora claimed that Prince Kaybee had stolen his song “Ready,” which he sent to the DJ via email, TikTok, and Messenger in 2021. Phora alleged that Prince Kaybee recreated the song and blocked him when he sought involvement.

Prince Kaybee’s Achievements

Despite his current troubles, Prince Kaybee has enjoyed a successful music career. He has won two South African Music Awards (SAMAs) — one for Best Dance Album in 2020 and another for Best Male Artist in 2018.
